Truffle Detection Dog Development Programs
Trained Truffle Dogs available for purchase

Your Truffle Dog Determines What You Take Out of the Ground
A truffle detection dog is not just part of your operation.
It is the asset that directly impacts your return.
Every hour spent searching…
Every truffle found or missed…
Every kilogram recovered…
Comes back to the quality of your dog.
Most Dogs Know the Odour. Very Few Know How to Hunt.
Many dogs can be taught to recognise truffle scent.
But when it comes to real orchard conditions, performance often breaks down.
Dogs become reliant on the handler.
Search patterns lose structure.
Motivation drops over time.
Truffles are missed - even when they are right there.
Not because the dog cannot smell.
Because the dog has never truly been taught how to hunt.
The Muddy Pawz Method™
Built on the Dual Detection Framework™
All dogs are developed using a structured system that separates what most people combine.
We develop the hunt first. Then we assign the target.
This creates dogs that:
-
Actively search instead of waiting for direction
-
Problem solve in changing conditions
-
Maintain focus and drive over long working periods
-
Locate and commit to source with clarity and precision
This is what allows a dog to perform in a real orchard - not just in training.
This Is an Investment in Performance
Like every part of truffle production - land, trees, irrigation and time - your dog is an investment.
The difference is:
Your dog is the only asset that actually finds the truffles.
A well-developed dog can significantly improve:
-
Speed of harvesting
-
Accuracy of location
-
Volume recovered per session
-
Overall return from your orchard
The better the dog, the more value it brings.

Development Pathways
Both pathways are designed to produce dogs to a high working standard.
All dogs complete formal training during the Australian truffle season, ensuring real world operational experience.
Puppy Development Program
Built From Day One
This pathway involves securing a puppy from proven working lines and developing the dog from the very beginning.
The dog is raised and trained by me over approximately 16 months, allowing full control and understanding of the dog’s development from day one.
Hunt work is introduced early and becomes a core part of the dog’s world as it grows.
What This Creates
-
Strong, deeply ingrained hunt behaviour
-
Structured development through all growth stages
-
Clear, reliable indication
-
High environmental confidence
-
A complete and known training history
This is the most comprehensive pathway for those wanting full development from the ground up.
Important
Puppy placements must be secured the year prior to development to ensure timelines can be met correctly.
Positions are strictly limited.
Once filled, additional clients will be scheduled for the following year.
Young Dog Development Program
This pathway involves selecting a suitable young dog that enters the program specifically for the formal training period.
While the dog has not been raised within the program from the beginning, it will still complete the same structured training and real world truffle season experience.
Selection Matters
All dogs entering this program undergo assessment to ensure they meet the required standard for training.
This ensures only suitable dogs are developed and capable of achieving a reliable detection outcome.
What This Pathway Offers
-
The same Muddy Pawz Method™ training system
-
The same Dual Detection Framework™ application
-
Real orchard-based training during truffle season
-
A dog developed to the same end working standard
The young dog pathway is often a more accessible entry point from a pricing perspective, as it does not include the full 16 month developmental phase.
However, this does not reduce the quality of training or the expected outcome.
Handler Real World Experience
A well trained dog is only part of the equation.
To get the most out of your dog, the handler must understand how to work with it in real conditions.
As part of the program, handler training is offered during the Australian truffle season, giving you the opportunity to:
-
Work your dog in real orchard environments
-
Learn how to read your dog’s behaviour and decision making
-
Understand how to support, guide and handle your dog effectively
-
Gain confidence in harvesting, handling and working your dog in season
This is where everything comes together - the dog, the training and the handler.
It ensures you are not just receiving a trained dog, but are equipped to continue building performance once the dog transitions into your orchard.
What You Receive
Every dog is developed to a high operational standard, including:
-
Structured, methodical search behaviour
-
Independent problem solving
-
Clear, consistent indication
-
Exposure to varied orchard environments and conditions
-
Real-world truffle detection experience during season
Combined with handler experience, this creates a complete working team.
Limited Availability
There is currently one position remaining for next season.
Due to the time, structure and hands-on development required, numbers are intentionally kept small.
This ensures quality is never compromised.
